How modern underlay works and why ventilation still matters

What does modern roof underlay do?

Breathable membranes explained

Strength, wind resistance and standards

Quality membranes are tested for nail tear strength, tensile strength and wind uplift resistance. For many pitched roofs, best practice is to provide continuous airflow from eaves to ridge. That often means a continuous eaves vent and a high level vent such as a ridge vent. Typical provisions are the equivalent of 10 mm at the eaves and 5 mm at the ridge, but details should follow BS 5250 guidance and manufacturer instructions. Soffit vents, over fascia vents and ventilated dry ridge systems work well on many Midhurst homes without affecting the look of clay tiles or natural slate.
